The Most Common Question We Get
"Should we book an SUV or a van for our group?" This is by far the most common question from tourists booking a Sri Lanka group tour. The answer depends on your group size, the type of roads you'll be travelling, and how much luggage you have.
SUV — Toyota Prado / Fortuner
Best for: 4-7 passengers
2-day package: LKR 50,000 | 7-day package: LKR 164,000
SUV Advantages
- Higher ground clearance — handles rough roads and hill country better
- More nimble — easier to park in busy tourist spots like Galle Fort
- Premium feel — many tourists prefer the look and feel of a large SUV
- Good for mixed terrain including national park access roads
SUV Disadvantages
- Limited luggage space for 7 passengers with full suitcases
- Middle row third seat can be uncomfortable on long drives
Highroof Van — Toyota HiAce
Best for: 8-14 passengers
2-day package: LKR 58,000 | 7-day package: LKR 176,000
Van Advantages
- Significantly more headroom — especially the highroof model
- Each passenger gets a proper individual seat — no cramped middle rows
- Large luggage area at the back handles multiple full-size suitcases
- Better value per person for groups of 6 or more
- Easier to move around inside during long drives
Van Disadvantages
- Larger footprint — can be harder to park in narrow old town streets
- Slightly higher running cost than SUV for groups under 6
The Verdict — When to Choose Each
Choose an SUV if:
- Your group is 4 people or fewer with minimal luggage
- You prefer a sportier, more premium feel
- Your itinerary includes Yala National Park or rough terrain
Choose a Highroof Van if:
- Your group is 5 people or more
- You have multiple large suitcases or equipment bags
- Your tour is 5+ days and comfort on long drives is a priority
- Any passengers are tall (over 180cm) — they will appreciate the extra headroom
For Groups of 5-7 Passengers
This is the grey zone. Both an SUV (7-seater) and a flatroof van are technically capable. Our recommendation: if your passengers are adults with full luggage on a multi-day tour, go for the van. If it's a light day trip or weekend with minimal bags, the SUV is fine.
